I’m all set for a long night of editing.  VHSs and wild mushroom cous cous in hand, I will sort through 290 photos I took today at Loretta & Lyle’s house (previous neighbors of mine).  Their house was built in the late 1800s so it was perfect for all that I’ve done thus far for my independent study.
Crit tomorrow… yay……! And final crit next Wednesday or Thursday…. it’s all coming so soon!!
Beauty and the Beast is up first.
(Thanks again Loretta for letting me come over this morning! So wonderful to see you and Lyle again and catch up!!)

Instead of a message letting me know about the juried exhibition and whether I got something in or not, I got this message:

Dear Laura,

Thank you for submitting to the Elements of Water exhibition.  On the call for entry, the juror’s selections were scheduled to be posted today.  The juror, John Paul Caponigro, has notified us that he will need more time than expected to jury the exhibition.

When the jurying is completed, an email will be sent to all submitters and the selections will be posted on the Center’s website at www.c4fap.org.

Thank you again for submitting your work to the Center.  If you have any questions, please contact [email address].

Sincerely,

Azarie Furlong
Exhibitions Manager

Oh well…. what’s another day or two I suppose.

I do need/want to shoot film again. It has been way too long…. 35mm, medium format, large format… anything really.  The fact that I can’t remember the last time I used this media is a clear signal we need to be reunited.

This reminds me of a Georgia O’Keefe painting.  I would really like to imagine that this is where she sat to paint it.  I think this is one of the more interesting points of view and creative ways to paint the bridge:

There’s large format cameras and then there’s large format cameras.

Never would I want a camera this large, but I do dream of the day when I own my own 4x5 or maybe/hopefully (dreamingdreaming) an 8x10…. or larger?! Ooooh…. dreams.

I would love to have all of these.  Seriously.  Decoration or working, I don’t really care….. working would be ideal, of course.

Although the sun is really pretty and it makes things grow and days warmer, as a photographer I can’t say I’m the biggest fan of a sunny day.  In fact, I really dislike taking photos on “pretty” sunny days…. I don’t like the high contrast and lack of control I have on my photos on those days.  It would be a lot different if I had the crew and equipment to alter lighting on these days, but until then I have to say “Sun, please hide away in the clouds!!”

I’m sitting here in Starbucks trying to work on a few photos to kill some time before I can park on campus for free (soo much work to do in ceramics) and the stupid sun is shining right through the window, halting all editing I’m doing.  For those reading who haven’t edited pictures or unfamiliar with the digital editing process, just know that the darker the room the better.  It really optimizes the colours you see in your photos and the screen to do it’s job to the fullest.

Today would be a nice day to take photos because it’s mostly cloudy and there is a lot of diffusion of the sun’s light, but it’s at just the right angle and just the right time of day that it’s shining directly on my computer.

Now that I’ve killed some time and I can go on campus to work in the ceramics studio, of course, the sun is tucked away enough that I could resume working on photos.  Those photos will have to hold off until Friday and Saturday night….. wooo my life is exciting right now, hah.

To go along with the water theme, a song by one of my favourite artists who sings a lot about water and the ocean.  She was in town recently and opened for The Decemberists, but I didn’t and couldn’t pay $40 to see her (and/or them…. I got to see them about four years ago for a lot cheaper).

I just submitted some work for a juried call for entries! (I don’t do this often, if ever, hence the excitement).  My photography teacher strongly encouraged me based on the first image (window with the trees in the background) and I selected the other two.  The series is Elements of Water.  I would be so happy if just one of them got in!  There’s no telling what the competition will be like, but we’ll see.  I’ll find out November 30th if any of my work has made it.

I really do need to submit to more call for entries… as many as I can…. and can afford; they add up.
